new years resolution: be healthy

One of our big goals for 2012 is to be healthier.  Nate set a goal at the beginning of the year to loose 15 pounds before our cruise in March and I decided to eat healthy right along with him. And so far it's going good!  Nate has been counting every single calorie and reads food labels now, which is definitely out of the ordinary for him.  He now realizes how unhealthy those Mike n Ike's actually are :)  But so far, he's already lost a lot and only has a few more pounds to go.

The best thing we've done so far was replacing our regular breakfast foods with a green smoothie each morning.   At first, Nate was very apprehensive about putting spinach in the blender, but surprisingly he likes them.  They are seriously SO yummy and SO healthy.  Where have a been that I didn't jump on this green smoothie bandwagon a while ago?? Our two favorite recipes are:

Berry-Spinach Blend (my old favorite)
spinach
berries
banana
water
flax seeds
and a tiny bit of orange juice concentrate

and

Mango-Banana-Spinach Blend (my new favorite)
spinach
banana
frozen mangos
and almond milk

We're also working out as much as we can. Since I got runner's knee last fall and it was no fun, we both decided to steer clear of running because its so harsh on your joints and all...so we change it up a lot by biking, elliptical, and weights.  I've fallen in love with spinning class and try to go as often as I can...I just wish it wasn't at 6am!  Once or twice a week the four of us all go over to the rec center and the boys LOVE playing in the day care while we work out.  And then afterwards, Nate and the boys practice shooting hoops in the gym which they love.

Now if only we could be healthier about our sleep habits....going to bed past midnight and waking up early just isn't cutting it.  Guess that's next on the fixing list.
