our off-roading excursion

For Nate's birthday (the big 3-0!) and Father's day this year, we rented a side by side for the weekend.  And it was so much fun!  I am convinced we need to buy one in the next few years so we can go a lot. On Friday evening, we went up to Silver Lake with the Brewers, Aaron & Samantha & kids, Becca & Swen & kids, and Erik & Amie & kids.  Aaron and Samantha rented a side by side too and Amie borrowed her parents so we had three side by sides up there and a couple of four-wheelers (thanks to the Brewers).  We each took turns riding around and the kids were in heaven. Aiden and Brennan especially loved it when Nate went really fast.
The next day we woke up early, dropped the kids off at my parents and headed up AF canyon with the side by side for the entire day.  Aaron and Samantha came too and so did Justin and Rich (Alison got sick so she couldn't come and Kamilla stayed home with Dakota). It was so fun having a little group of us to drive around together.  We first drove from Tibble Fork to Mineral Basin.  Rich led the way on his motorcycle and we all followed.  Well, it turns out that the trail to get to Mineral Basin is CRAZY rocky and technical.  We saw lots of big jeeps up there, but no side by sides...and now we know why!  It was a little difficult trying to navigate around big rocks and boulders on our little two-seater side by side.  At one point, Nate and I were on two wheels...that was scary.  Justin's four wheeler couldn't make it up, so he ended up hopping in with us part way up. But we powered through and we made it!  I don't think we'll be trying that trail again any time soon but it sure made quite the experience!
We made it to the top!
After the rocky trail, we wanted more of a dirt road so we could go fast.  So we headed up to Cascade Springs and had a fun time going fast on a much smoother road.  Aaron said he got up to 70mph. Ours only got up to 55mph but it sure felt fast! When we got to Cascade Springs, we were all FILTHY.  The road was super dusty and a lot of it found its way onto us. Because of the goggles, we didn't get any dirt around our eyes...it mostly settled on our cheeks and chins and noses and even teeth - making it look like we all had a 5 o'clock shadow! It was pretty funny as you will see:
After a little lunch at Cascade Springs, we rode around some more and ended up back at Silver Lake.  It doesn't get much prettier than AF canyon!  It was such an amazing day and we're already talking about doing it again!
